In our busy and fast paced world, we all find we have a backlog of projects or daily activities that we put on hold because of demanding in our face issues. Be it individuals, business, education, governmental, or non-profits, we are covered up with daily job requirements that take away from the reviewing our plans and implementing those goals in our workplace.

A truly untapped human capital resource to meet those growing demands is the utilization of current college students as interns and part time employees. These students fulfill the standard qualifications for completing the functional office operations and research tasks. Many leaders and professionals would not be where they are today without the internship or cooperative educational experience gained as a college student.

The University of Mary Hardin- Baylor offers an ongoing program providing area organizations an additional resource for the search and development of outstanding students ready and able to assist in special projects or temporary staffing needs.

Internships take on many shapes and forms including academic, non-academic, paid, and non-paid positions. According to recruiting standards, most hiring managers prefer to hire recent graduates with experience for full time positions. The internship experience serves this requirement well in providing the student the opportunity to shadow and see first hand the true working environment.

An internship program must be a win-win endeavor for all involved-not just another community support activity for the employer, but beneficial to the ongoing effective operations of the organization. At the same time, the intern receives first hand exposure to how business is conducted and methods of carrying out those functions. Additionally the student develops new skills and insights into occupations that will build confidence and assist in career planning success. For the internship site provider, there is no long term obligation or extensive reporting requirements. Interns may serve a full school year, one semester, or a specific project period. Students may gain invaluable experience as well as completing a course or degree plan requirement.

The Career Center at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor serves as the clearinghouse for employers, students, schools and department’s internship connections or part-time or full time job postings.
